Loose 32nd CCTS Crew 1099
Loose 32nd CCTS Crew 1099 Summary
The Loose Crew completed their CCTS (Combat Crew Training School) with the 32nd CCTS at Davis-Monthan Air Field in Tucson, Arizona. They were one of the first crews transferred to the 492nd in Alamogordo, New Mexico on 5 Jan 44. They were assigned to the 859th BS.
On 15 Feb 44, this crew was involved in a crashlanding about a mile and a half from the base at Alamogordo. Four of the 11-man crew were killed, two seriously injured and the remaining five suffered minor injuries. See: Training Accident
Naturally, the crew was disbanded. The two pilots ended up in other bomb groups and completed combat tours in Europe. Three of the crew were reassigned to the Smith 906 and Roads 915 crews in the 859th BS. Our assumption is that since the rest of the survivors had major injuries, they spent the rest of the war recovering.
Lt Robert Taylor, the crew's regular bombardier, wasn't on the plane that day. In his place was another bombardier along with a bombardier instructor. Taylor, now orphaned, was reassigned to the Roads Crew.
